Breakfast for Two: Pop Pop style

When Shane was a little guy, maybe a year and a half old, he was enjoying breakfast in New City with his Grandfather. I was expecting Adam at the time so having someone offer to get him breakfast was a great treat. Little did I know what kind of treat!! PopPop gave Shane a cup of coffee (very light with lots of sugar) and Oreos for breakfast. At the time we did not say wtf!!! but that is exactly how I felt...who gives a toddler coffee and Oreos? When I asked why this was the breakfast choice my father said, very sincerely, “He wanted it!”

Case closed. He wanted it.

Picture Perfect

All of us take pictures of our families. Some people will reluctantly pose, some will run and hide, and others are right in the thick of it. Dad was an eager subject anytime and anywhere.

As I go through photos I see him smiling at a company picnic in the '60s, waving from the deck of a beach house, walking along the beach, standing tall at Churchill Downs, in the Bahamas, in Europe, on Brooklyn street, or while in the Army, and with every child and grandchild. He would pose with people or alone. He would follow directions well, too. If we asked him to walk ahead a little, no problem. Turn to the left, sure. Hold up a container of Prime in the snow, not a big deal. Stand on that stump in the backyard, done. He enjoyed being front and center. I am so glad he did.

(I guess it didnt hurt that he was very photogenic. On the other hand I have one of my mother with a plastic bag over her head. She hates it so much.)
